WEIMARANER FACT: Weims are great dogs in the right setting and the worst in the wrong household. They are very high energy and demanding. Obedience. training is a must, since they can be hardheaded and pushy. Crate training is highly recommend. They do require an enormous amount of exercise daily--not just occasional walks or weekend hikes. A walk around the block daily is NOT enough exercise for a Weimaraner They are also loving companions who want nothing more than to be with you. They are low maintenance, shed a little. Weims have fairly strong prey drive and generally do not do well with cats, rabbits, birds or other furry critters. Purchasing a puppy from the newspaper in the Sacramento/Lodi/Bay Area is not recommended. There are commercial breeders locally who crank out puppies that often advertise in the paper. These breeders breed for profit only and do not do health testing, don’t belong to any Weimaraner clubs and do not do any type of performance events with the dogs. You can do much better. At the very minimum, the parents of a well-bred puppy should have some type of title (breed championship, obedience, hunting, agility or tracking title); be at least 2 years old and have had their hips scored with an OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) rating of fair, good or excellent. Be sure to ask to see the hip ratings or look it up online www.offa.org. Avoid any breeders who cannot provide you with this information. Hip displasia which can be a problem in weimaraners can be avoided.
